Three of Penticton’s youngest athletes brought home some hardware last weekend after participating in a province-wide rock climbing tournament in Coquitlam.

Oren Korvin, 9, Noah Sabourin, 10, and Tomas Korvin, 11, all finished within the top 10 of either the Youth “C” or “D” boulder categories on Nov. 6 at the Lower Mainland’s Climb Base 5 facility.

Based out of Penticton’s Hoodoo Adventures, the boys compete as part of the local Crushers Youth Climbing Team.

While Thomas placed second overall against competitors from across the Lower Mainland and Interior in Youth “D”, his brother, Oren, finished third in Youth “C.”

Sabourin, meanwhile, finished sixth in Youth “D.”

“It has been an absolute joy to see Penticton be represented on a provincial level,” said Nick Korvin, the team’s head coach. “Not only do these events give kids an opportunity to practice their climbing skills and see the results of their dedication, but more importantly, they provide an opportunity to build a strong team and community atmosphere.”

The name of the game last weekend was called “scramble,” and requires competitors to complete as many indoor rock climbing routes as they can within a span of two and a half hours.

Hoodoo Adventures youth climbing program offers recreational, as well as competitive opportunities for young athletes in the South Okanagan.

The team’s head coach has competed as a rock climber for more than 25 years. Stan Sabourin, the Crushers’ assistant coach, has participated in the sport for nearly four decades.

The Crushers Youth Climbing Team says they are currently accepting new athletes, aged 8 to 14.
