The Penticton Disc Golf club (PDGC) and the Rotary Club of
Penticton will be hosting a grand opening for the Rotary Marina View Disc Golf Course in Penticton on Oct. 1. They invite the public to join in celebrating the official opening of Penticton’s newest free recreational facility.
The opening ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. at the first tee on the Rotary Marina View Disc Golf Course. The Rotary Marina View Disc Golf Course is a nine-hole disc golf course located on the esplanade above Lake Okanagan Marina.
“We are excited to officially announce the completion of the Rotary Marina View Disc Golf Course. The Penticton Disc Golf Club has worked hard over the last two years to establish and grow the sport of disc golf in Penticton," said Penticton Disc Golf Club president Shawn Black. "The Rotary Club of Penticton saw the potential in disc golf, and the benefits it can bring to the community and the youth of our community. We are happy to have partnered with the Rotary Club."
In the spring, Penticton city council granted the PDGC permission to install a disc golf course on the esplanade. With funding from the Rotary Club, the PDGC purchased and installed nine official disc golf basket targets. The disc golf club also built tee pads and installed information and direction signs on the course. PDGC volunteers provided the volunteer labour to build the tee pads, install the baskets and signs.
“This project fits perfectly for the Rotary Club of Penticton to be involved in,” said Rotary Club president Barb Hoolaeff. “This is yet another Rotary Park for youth and adults alike to enjoy. The Rotary Club of Penticton is proud to be a part of The Rotary Marina View Disc Golf Course.”
Disc golf is a fun alternative to traditional golf. Instead of hitting a ball with a club, disc golfers throw a flying disc (frisbee). The objective is the same as golf, to complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes (throws for disc golf). Disc golf is easy to learn, and fun for the entire family. There is no cost to play disc golf at most courses, and golf discs are relatively cheap when compared to a set of golf clubs.
Following the opening ceremony, attendees are invited to give the disc golf course a try. The PDGC will have spare discs on hand for anyone wanting to play a round on the new course.
