Summerland Steam, Kelowna Chiefs to face each other in Junior B playoffs

The Summerland Steam and the Kelowna Chiefs will face each other in Junior B hockey playoffs.

The Steam finished the regular season in third place in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference: Okanagan Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League while the Chiefs finished in second place.

The best of seven playoff series will begin on Friday when the Steam will face the Chiefs at the Rutland Arena in Kelowna. The game begins at 7 p.m.

On Saturday at 7 p.m., the two teams will meet in Kelowna once again.

The third and fourth games in the series will be held at the Summerland Arena on Monday, Feb. 26 and Tuesday, Feb. 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

If additional games are needed, the fifth game will be in Kelowna on Thursday, March 1, beginning at 7 p.m. The sixth game will be at the Summerland Arena on Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and the seventh game will be in Kelowna on Saturday, March 3, beginning at 7 p.m.

The two teams are closely matched. In regular season play, Summerland has 27 wins, 16 losses, one tie and three overtime losses for a total of 58 points, while Kelowna has 27 wins, 15 losses, one tie and four overtime losses for a total of 59 points.

However, when the two teams have faced each other, the records tell a slightly different story.

In eight games against the Chiefs, the Steam have won two and lost three in regular play. Summerland earned one overtime win against Kelowna, but lost twice to the Chiefs in overtime play.

In games against the Chiefs, the Steam had 26 goals for and 44 goals against.

The winner of this series will go up against the winner of the semi-final between the Osoyoos Coyotes and the Princeton Posse.

The Coyotes, with a record of 32 wins, 11 losses, two ties and two overtime losses, finished in first place in the division, while the Posse, with 17 wins,24 losses, two ties and four overtime losses, finished in fourth place.
