A Penticton Panther from more than 20 years ago is now an NHL bench boss.
Spencer Carbery was named the head coach of the Washington Capitals on May 30, after spending two seasons behind the bench as an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He played 58 games for Penticton’s BCHL franchise during the
“It’s a tremendous honour and privilege to be named the head coach of the Washington Capitals,” said Carbery in a press release. “I would like to thank the Capitals organization for affording me the opportunity to lead this team.”
In his one season at Memorial Arena, the winger scored 37 goals and 70 points.
Carbery, 41, was born in Victoria and also suited up in the BCHL for the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
The Penticton Vees, who played under the Panthers’ brand from 1990 to 2004, recently congratulated Carbery on becoming the 20th head coach in Washington’s history.
