As we approach Family Day on Feb. 9, our newest statutory holiday, we can reflect on the meaning of family.

The Summerland Aquatic Centre will have activities for Family Day on Monday.

As we approach Family Day on Feb. 9, our newest statutory holiday, we can reflect on the meaning of family.

What does family mean to you, is it your children, spouse, parents, in laws, cousins, aunts and uncles or is your family a group of friends and associates that you like to spend time with?

The British Columbia Parks and Recreation Association has provided funding for local recreation departments to organize special family day events.

Here in Summerland we are hosting a free Family Day Swim at the Aquatic and Fitness Centre from 1 to 3 p.m.

The intention is for families to spend time together and be active.  The inflatable toys will be in the water, free helium balloons and refreshments will be available and best of all your family will be active for free.

Participaction.ca is a great website with all kinds of ideas and activities for all members of your family.  In Summerland we are fortunate to have lots of playgrounds, walking and cycling paths.

We have awesome recreation facilities and sport teams for everyone.

As we are approaching spring it is a reminder that registration for many of the spring leagues and teams start soon and we can help you get involved, get moving and get healthy at Summerland Recreation, 13205 Kelly Ave., 250-494-0447, summerland.ca and follow us on facebook.com/summerlandrec.

Brenda Ingram is the recreation manager for the Summerland Parks and Recreation Department.
