Tim Coghlin, the coach of the St. Norbert College men’s hockey team in De Pere, Wis., has received the British Columbia Hockey Hall of Fame’s Pat Quinn Coach Award.

The award is given annually to an individual at any level of coaching who “helps and shares excellence by educating players in the sport of hockey.”

Coghlin received the award on July 20 at a ceremony in Penticton. The award was presented by Vancouver Canucks head coach Travis Green.

Coghlin grew up in Summerland and played hockey in Summerland and Penticton.

He has been at St. Norbert College for the past 25 years and during that time, his teams have compiled a record of 556 wins, 142 losses and 53 ties.

The team has appeared in 18 NCAA Division III tournaments since 1997.

In March, Coghlin led the St. Norbert team to its fifth NCAA Division III national championship. He is the second coach in Division III history to receive five national titles.

Before becoming the coach at St. Norbert College, Coghlin was the captain of the UP-Stevens Point team during the team’s first NCAA Division III championship in 1989.

He was also an assistant coach with the Pointers when they were runner-up in 1992 and when they won the national title in 1993.

Coghlin was a two-time All-America selection as defense and a three-time All-NCHA selection at Stevens Point. He was later inducted into that school’s athletic hall of fame.

He was signed with the Vancouver Canucks and played briefly with the Milwaukee Admirals in 1989.

He injured his shoulder in training camp the next season and joined the Fife Flyers of the British Premier League as a player and assistant coach.

Coghlin holds a Master’s of Education and a bachelor’s degree in communications, both from UW-Stevens Point.

He lives in Green Bay, Wis. with his wife and two children.
