A workshop later this month will help Summerland residents who are finding themselves in the informal role of caregiver for a family member with dementia.

“The physical and psychological toll on family caregivers is considerable,” said Laurie Myres, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s support and education coordinator for Summerland, the South Okanagan and Similkameen region.

The one-day workshop will cover dementia-specific topics in the morning. These include understanding dementias, communicating with a person with dementia and understanding behaviour as a form of communication.

The afternoon sessions will cover self-care for the caregiver and planning for the future.

The workshop will be held Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Summerland Seniors Village, 12803 Atkinson Rd. Participants are asked to bring a lunch.

To register, contact Myres at 1-888-318-1122 or 250-493-8182, or lmyres@alzheimerbc.org.
