Trade agreements have local impact

Dear Editor:

It is with a heavy heart that I read that a local company, Summerland Waste, has lost the local waste removal contract and the jobs that go with it, to a foreign multinational as a result of trade agreements signed by senior levels of government.

The provincially negotiated TILMA agreement exempts the procurement of services with a value of less than $75,000.

If the term of the Summerland waste management contract was shortened to three months, it could have been left with Summerland Waste, with a much happier outcome.

I hope that when we next go to the vote provincially we remember that the pro big business Liberals gave us the TILMA agreement and that the federal Conservatives ensnared the country in NAFTA.

We now see how these agreements have come home to roost locally for Summerland Waste and provincially for our forestry and agricultural industries.
