LETTER: Summerland needs forward-thinking council

Business, housing, entertainment and roads must be addressed by municipal government

Dear Editor:

Whoever becomes mayor, this town is dying and needs a progressive and forward thinking council and mayor to bring life back into this town.

I have lived here for over 28 years. I have seen this town go from being so busy with every storefront full and you couldn’t find a parking spot anywhere, to empty storefronts with fewer and fewer people shopping here.

If possible, it would be great if the city or council could give an incentive to storefront landlords to keep rents down and keep a storefront filled and allow a business to thrive and prosper rather than shut its doors after a short time because they can’t afford it.

We need more affordable housing for families.

We need fun things happening in Summerland at night so people don’t travel to neighbouring towns for entertainment.

Our roads are an embarrassment.

We need more touristy things to attract people to actually make this a destination to visit here, like a theme town. Look what they did years ago to the dying town of Leavenworth and how it thrives now.

All of this is just my opinion and I know some will agree or disagree. I just find it sad to see this town go from vibrant to dying. I would welcome your thoughts.

Ingrid Carter
