Public needs vote on prison

Dear Editor:

Re: Prison verdict awaiting.

Summerland officials are not the only ones wondering where in the Okanagan valley this prison will be located.

The bigger issue is why Summerland City Council arbitrarily submitted Summerland as a potential site to build this facility without the consent from its citizens.

Neither of the two polls that were conducted are valid:

The exit poll conducted at the town hall meeting was limited by two factors. It was not advertised and participation was limited to the size of the forum. There are fewer than 300 seats in the theater.

The on-line poll excluded half of the citizens simply because they are not connected to the Internet.

The polls were not supervised by a credible independent agency.

The citizens of Penticton had a vote on the issue, and their city council subsequently removed their city from the list of contenders.

Mayor Perrino has stated publicly that the citizens of Summerland also will have a vote.

What are we waiting for?

Why have we not had this vote?
