Prison survey results force public meeting

Dear Editor:

I felt it necessary to reply to last week’s letter stating that our survey regarding the correctional facility was flawed.

We were well aware that this survey was not scientifically perfect but rather it was a simple, low cost method for council to get a feel for what the residents wanted.

The question was whether people wanted the possibility of have a correctional facility in Summerland “pursued or looked into further.”

The only decision being made as a result of the survey was if we should have a public meeting to discuss it further.

If it had been an overwhelming “no” then council would not have proceeded any further. With over 800 participants voicing their opinion and over half in favour of pursuing it, it is clear that this issue needs to be looked into further.

The survey had the capability of tracking duplicate votes and adjusting the count accordingly.

There were a few who had trouble accessing the survey due to a certain browser, but most people were able to access it and failing that, they could come into Municipal Hall to vote.

Please come to the Public Meeting being held on Monday, March 7 at Centre Stage Theatre. Doors open at 6 p.m., presentation at 6:30 p.m.
