LETTER: Water pipe frozen underground

Our water main was frozen, and we were told to call a plumber. The problem is that the pipe is frozen underground.

Dear Editor:

On Jan. 13 we discovered we had no water. Our water main was frozen, and we were told to call a plumber. The problem is that the pipe is frozen underground.

We’ve had offers to dig up the pipe and thaw it, but since it runs under our concrete driveway, we’d rather not go that route at this time.

I’ve been told of a machine that connects a wire to the pipe in the house and another wire where our line connects to the city water line. An electrical current is then sent between the two points to thaw the pipe.

This is the sort of technological help we are looking for, but have yet to discover. Can anyone help us?
