Dear Editor:

I note with interest that we have been awarded $4.53 million by the provincial government to spend as required by Summerland’s council.

One idea suggested was for updating our water infrastructure.

I understand that Summerland has many miles of asbestos water mains that are older than the suggested life span, which is 50 to 70 years.

It is unclear if ingested asbestos is harmful in the short term, but when it breaks down it can’t be good for your health.

Summerland should start now renewing the oldest of the outdated water mains and be ahead of the game, instead of waiting until a major break causes widespread damage and expense.
