Dear Editor:

The Summerland Chamber of Commerce crossed the proverbial red line when its executive director, David Hull, on behalf of the 750 Summerland businesses, wrote a letter to Dan Ashton to raise concerns about the proportional representation referendum being conducted by Elections BC.

Hull’s letter verges on fear mongering and is consistent with the position taken by the B.C. Liberal Party and, inadvertently or not, aligns Summerland’s 750 businesses with Ashton’s NoPR position.

For the past six months I have been part of a group of local community members who support a change to proportional representation.

We have been working hard: going door to door, phoning, talking to people at the local markets, and handing out pamphlets.

One thing I can tell you is that our public is politically aware and that they do not all support one side or the other.

So, is it healthy for Summerland businesses to get involved in politics at this level?

Are they comfortable with the possibility of alienating their customers?

Well, in my view, they best be aware that David Hull and the Summerland Chamber of Commerce has publicly declared their affiliation with the B.C. Liberal Party.
