LETTER: Reconsider horse bylaw

I was pretty upset to see horses swimming in the lake. In fact, they had taken over a beach where I had previously unloaded my boat

Dear Editor:

When the sewer was put in in Summerland, I was really happy because I felt I could swim once again in the lake after years of being unable to stomach the idea of swimming in our effluent.

I could healthily kayak and swim and take friends to the beach and picnic or just feel good about walking the lakeside.

I was pretty upset to see horses swimming in the lake. In fact, they had taken over a beach where I had previously unloaded my boat because it was a shorter carry than at other beaches.

The water from that beach carries down to our Summerland beaches at Peach Orchard, Rotary Beach, Powell Beach and Sunoka.

What a nasty thought.

I won’t be swimming here any longer and I will feel sort of betrayed by a council that unanimously voted horses over health and fresh water.

It looks romantic when you see horses racing across sandy beaches in movies, but when you really think about it, it would be pretty awful to be walking into the water and step on a great pile of dung or to have it float past you as you dive into the lake.

Hopefully this matter can be rethought.
