Letter: Make Penticton’s Lakeshore promenade pedestrian-only

Much cheaper and aesthetically pleasing alternative to city’s one-way bike lane idea

Editor:

I appreciate and share councillor Katie Robinson’s concern about pedestrian safety on the Lakeshore boulevard.

I have a suggestion though to address this that is much less expensive and that does not involve turning this beautiful boulevard into something ugly and financially unnecessarily costly :

Why not only allow pedestrian traffic on the path and enforce appropriate bylaw(s) to prevent bicycles and scooters.

I understand that cyclists also want to share the view of the lake from Lakeshore but is it unreasonable to ask them to either dismount and walk the boulevard beside their bicycle, Or bike along Lakeshore , but on the other side of the road? Is this really too much to ask to do for the safety and enjoyment of the larger community?

In my opinion what I propose is not an unreasonable alternative and if followed up, there is much less upheaval and less financial and aesthetic loss.

As we are well aware the city of Penticton can really use the available funds for more essential services like increased policing and any monies not directed to ‘Lakeshore’ at this time can be used better.

I know we live in a time when everybody assumes they have the ‘right’ to everything but this is not always possible or in the best interest of the larger community. Even the Rolling Stones already said’ you can’t always get what you want.’
