More than 50 per cent wanted to change the electoral system

Dear Editor:

It is good to read the voices for proportional representation speak out and to recommend places where information about this system can be found.

There is a lot of very good information and studies have been conducted over at least three decades. We are also gifted with many immigrants from countries who know the value of this proportional system.

There have been two information sessions in Summerland and more in Penticton to help inform us which makes the claims that it is being rushed or that it is too complicated for us to understand seem rather suspect.

Claims that our past referendums clearly stated that we don’t want it do not hold water.

Requiring a 60 per cent vote is not done in any of our votes.

More than 50 per cent wanted to change the system.

When we know that only three of the OECD countries do not use Pro Rep ( Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom) and knowing what is happening in terms of more than 50 per cent of our votes not being represented in parliament and knowing how often we hear that our votes don’t count surely we want to consider at least trying (without trying to sabotage) this system that so much of the world uses and have the intelligence not to be totally confused by.

I imagine a world where people in government work together for we the people

Democracy was said to be government by the people for the people.

Lets allow all of us to be represented and to have a seat at the table.

Diddy Evans
