Dear Editor:
Yesterday, I learned about a proposed 100 foot cell tower installation on Robinson Road, near Granny’s Fruit Stand and orchards.
While I recognize the importance of telecommunications infrastructure for communication advancement of our community, I have to wonder if this location is appropriate. The owner of this property will no doubt be well compensated for the use of his property, but I plead with you to please consider the imposition of the radiation from this tower on those living close to it.
It is true that Health Canada, as well as some other governing bodies in Canada, do not yet recognize the harmful effects of RF-EMF on human health or the ecology of plant and animal population; however, according to published peer reviewed literature, people who live within 400 meters to a cell tower will have a much higher chance in developing cancers and other serious diseases.
In addition, The World Health Organization has listed radio frequency (RF) radiation emitted by cell phone towers as a possible carcinogen, in the same category as DDT and lead -- meaning possible cancer cause. The closer you are physically located to a cell tower, the more harmful it is.
Many of us have chosen Summerland as our home and we work hard to minimize toxins in our environment. I strongly suggest that those living in the vicinity of this proposed microwave tower, learn about the potential health risks and attend Rogers’ public meeting.
