LETTER: Local representation will continue under proportional representation

A vote for proportional representation will improve the electoral system in British Columbia

Dear Editor:

Everyone will have a local MLA with proportional representation.

All ridings in B.C. will continue to elect a local MLA under any of the three proposed ProRep options.

However, a yes vote for ProRep will provide the opportunity to improve our electoral system by having the provincial legislature mirror the total voting results across all provincial ridings.

ProRep will mean the end of false majority rule of less than 40 per cent of the popular vote getting 100 per cent of the seats in government leaving the runner-up with only the power to oppose.

It will also help end adversarial government. ProRep will foster collaboration to generate broadly supported long term legislative improvements for all British Columbians.

Each party vets its own potential candidates and awards flag-bearer status to their favourite.

This is true for both proportional representation and the current first past the post system. ProRep’s three options will all work in B.C. Details are available at elections.bc.ca as well as fairvote.ca/pr4bc.

The deadline for ballot submission has been extended to Dec. 7. Please send in your ballot.
