Dear Editor:
Although I appreciate our council's environmental concerns. their new compost/garbage plan has created a tremendous amount of frustration.
We were sent (at what cost?) plastic counter containers for compost that were designed to fit compostable plastic bags but told we must use other bags that do not fit and get so soggy the bottom falls out.
No problem. We are told, put them in the freezer until collection day. So now we have so many bags in the freezer we have little room for food. These paper bags also cost four times what the plastic do.
We now must drag out a huge compost bin weekly (previously only seasonally) with three or four tiny bags in it.
All our garbage which is now picked up every second week must be jammed into a tiny container.
I don't like to complain without offering a solution, but we will need a little compromise here.
• Let us use the compostable plastic bags the counter containers are designed for. If they are not compostable as advertised, the Glad brand needs to be taken to court. These bags will not fall apart and can be sealed reasonably well
• Give us a smaller compost bin that can more easily stored inside.
• Give us a larger garbage bin or return to weekly pick up.
We are only two of us and find this program very frustrating. I would be interested in hearing how larger families feel about it.
