Earth Hour will benefit youth centre

Dear Editor:

I would like to thank the Summerland Review for your promotion of the Earth Hour initiative to take place Saturday March 26 at 8:30 p.m.

Associated with Earth Hour observation is a contest sponsored by Fortis.

The community that has the highest per capita “pledged participation” wins the contest. Summerland won last year.

I would like to emphasize two important aspects of this year’s Earth Hour.

First, the recipient of the $5,000 energy upgrade grant if Summerland wins the competition will be the Harold Simpson Memorial Youth Centre on Peach Orchard Road.

This building is heavily used by numerous community groups. It is also an economical venue that is constantly rented by Summerlanders for private functions.

The building was constructed in the early 1990s so the HVAC systems are showing their age, resulting in a $2,000 bill last month.

The prize money would certainly help in keeping the youth centre affordable for youth groups such as The Boys and Girls Club, Scouts, Guides and Cadets, among others.

Second, the reference to pledging at www.fortisbc.com/earthhour, is not a monetary pledge, but just a promise to observe Earth Hour.

On behalf of the Summerland Youth Centre and all the groups and individuals that use the building, please make your pledge (at the web link above) so that Summerlanders win the challenge as we did last year.
