Earth-friendly events continue

It’s been a busy week of earth-friendly events for Summerland residents with more to come during the weekend.

It’s been a busy week of earth-friendly events for Summerland residents with more to come during the weekend. Summerland’s week long celebration represents one of Canada’s largest Earth Week events.

The challenges facing our society require action and participating in Earth Week is a positive step towards our commitment of reducing community greenhouse gas emissions in Summerland.

On Saturday April 25, children will be delighted by the many choices of events, including Blue, Green and Clean at the library from 1 to 2 p.m.

Families are welcome to come listen to stories, and participate in songs and activities centred around protecting our earth.

From there, head over to Imagination Station from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Summerland Arts Centre where kids of all ages can use recycled materials to make a cork raft or a pinwheel.

True Grain Bread is also hosting an event focused on red fife wheat and its importance to sustainable wheat farming in Canada.

Drop by the bakery from 1 to 4 p.m. to learn more and all participating children will get a free cookie and a bag of wheat seeds to plant at home.

Also taking place on Saturday is Taking out the Olives at the Summerland Ornamental Gardens House (Pacific Agricultural Research Station), beginning at 10:30 a.m. Friends of the Gardens invite you to learn about invasive trees in the Okanagan and participate in the symbolic removal of a mature Russian olive tree.

The week will culminate with the ninth annual Earth Day Celebration on Sunday April 26 at Dale Meadows Sports Complex from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enjoy getting your hands dirty for a good cause!

Native trees and shrubs will be planted and invasive species will be removed along Prairie Creek.

A display area will feature information on endangered wildlife and habitats, landscaping with native plants, bird boxes, invasive plants and more.

Kids will be entertained with face painting, crafts and a scavenger hunt.

Earth Week is about residents of Summerland and surrounding areas coming together to have fun and learn more about what they can do to make a difference.
