So far this year, the Summerland Library has been able to host numerous different events.
These include core programs such as preschool story times, baby rhyme times, and adult book clubs.
However, there have been many other fun and exciting events that fall a bit outside of the scope of what you may typically expect from your public library.

At the beginning of the year, the library held a jigsaw puzzle exchange which turned into an all-year puzzle lending library. You can “check out” any of them in the dedicated puzzle cupboard.
We also continued our monthly virtual film club that was started during the pandemic lockdown. This works similarly to a book club, but instead of reading a book before the meeting, members will watch a specific movie and then gather virtually to discuss what they liked, disliked, learn information behind the making of the movie and explore prevalent themes.
We always knew that Summerland had such great artistic talent, but they really knocked our socks off at our Paint Afternoon events. This year, we painted cardinals in birch trees, mystical mushroom forests, and soon we will be creating a spooky-ooky ghost! These paint afternoons are led by me, a self-proclaimed non-expert. I guide the artists step-by-step through the painting, using materials and canvases provided by the library.
Over the course of the year, we have given out hundreds of take-and-make craft kits. During spring break, there were do-it-yourself chia pets and macrame plant holders, and for Mother’s Day, kids took home a sunflower lollipop holder craft to make and give to mom.
The summer had us busy with yoga classes, beekeepers and reptile shows. Along with Ryga Fest activities such as the ever popular Vinyl Night and author visits.
While we still have some more exciting programs coming up this year, we want to know what the community would like to see from their library next year.
For the next few weeks, there will be a box at the front desk of the library, where you can enter your suggestions for upcoming programs. This will help us tailor our programming to fit the needs and desires of the Summerland community.
