Yellow, red and brown, gently falling down. Autumn leaves are falling, slowly to the ground.

The little rhyme that my children used to sing in Kindergarten still pops into my head around this time of year. Across the street from the library, we have a magnificent view of the trees in Memorial Park. Right now they are in full colour with red, yellow and golden leaves, reminding us that winter is just around the corner.

Did you know that the library has an outdoor reading terrace that looks into the park?

We even have a fire table that we light and gather around for a little extra warmth.

We will be lighting the fire table on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 3 to 4 p.m. for some friendly fireside tales, just in time for the spookiest night of the year.

Dress for the weather and bring the family down to the library. You can even dress up in your Halloween costume if you like, those are always fun to see.

We will be reading stories out loud and then a small treat will be provided to take home. Book prizes will also be given away, there has to be something for the grown ups too!

Have you seen the giant pumpkin in the parking plaza? Lots of people have been taking photos of this huge pumpkin and fall decorations. It’s a perfect backdrop for the season. Probably a little too big to be carved as a jack-o’-lantern though.

Speaking of carving pumpkins, there are a lot of books in the library with instructions and ideas on how to create these traditional Halloween decorations.

One book in particular takes carving to a new level. Ray Villafane’s Pumpkins are works of art. He has been described as the Picasso of pumpkin carving, but he says that anyone with the right tools can follow his advice and create their own “gourdgeous” pumpkins.

Extreme Pumpkins: Diabolical do-it-yourself designs to amuse your friends and scare your neighbours, by Tom Nardone is the book for more frightening ideas.

Tons of scary inspiration that can be replicated easily at home.

Bring the family down for some friendly fireside tales and check out some books to get creative with your decorations. See you at the library.
