May 7, 1941 - June 28, 2021
Wanda Weber (nee Stahl) was born May 7, 1941 in Matildendorf, Poland, the youngest of four children (Richard, Ernest, Frieda and Wanda) of Eugenie and Jacob Stahl. Towards the end of the Second World War, Wanda's family fled from their Poland home with little more than the clothes on their backs via a horse and wagon, as the Russians moved westward into Poland.
They fled to Germany, where they lived in refugee camps in the German port city of Kiel. Wanda's family applied to emigrate from Germany to immigrate to the USA, Canada and South Africa, and they were granted permission from Canada. Their trip to Canada was sponsored by a Lutheran Church in Iron Springs, Alberta.
After immigrating to Canada, the family worked for several years in the sugar beet fields near Iron Springs, Alberta to pay back their passage. After repaying their passage, the family purchased an orchard in Summerland, BC, where they settled.
In Summerland, through family friends, Wanda met her future husband, George Weber. George had a very similar refugee background. He was born in Rajka, Hungary on December 30, 1931. His family had also fled Hungary, were refugees in Germany, immigrated to Alberta, worked there in the sugar beet fields to pay their passage, and then settled on a small farm in Faulder, just west of Summerland.
Wanda and George were married on June 30, 1962. They purchased a small orchard in the Prairie Valley area of West Summerland and settled there, where they started a family. George worked as a Volkswagen mechanic in Penticton for several years, and then left his job there to work the orchard full time.
George and Wanda opened a fruit stand on Prairie Valley Road called Westgate Produce, and ran that for several years, growing and selling fruits and vegetables.
They switched to trucking their fruit to sell at the farmer's markets in Vancouver, including Granville Island and Lonsdale Quay, and did so for many years.
After retiring, and selling off most of their orchard, they built their dream house, and enjoyed a happy life there, enjoying visits with their children and grandchildren.
George passed away suddenly on November 7, 2018 from a perforated bowel. Wanda sold the house and remaining orchard, and moved into a Linden Estates condominium, where she enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Wanda passed away early on the morning of June 28, 2021, as a result of a swimming accident on Peach Orchard Beach in Summerland.
George and Wanda are survived by their three adult children, Ron, Sandy, and Steve, and eight grandchildren, Sydney, Matthew, Anna, Mika, Kaia, Sophia, Rylee, and Brennan.
Wanda will be remembered as a kind soul, who went to great lengths to make everyone feel welcome, comfortable, and well fed in her home. She was a wonderful devoted mother and Oma, and will be missed by the many lives she touched. There will be no funeral and her ashes will be scattered together with George's at a private ceremony to be scheduled at a future date.
