SHIRLEY CLARA BROWN DREYER

Shirley Clara Brown Dreyer passed away peacefully in the company of family on November 21, 2015 at the Utz Terrace Retirement Village in Hanover, PA at the age of 84. She was born April 20, 1931 in Waterville, ME to the late Lawrence Sr. and Sadie B. (Williams) Brown. She studied nursing in Boston and became a nurse anesthetist while raising four children. She was the first female commodore of the Summerland, British Columbia Yacht Club in 1992. She loved cruising around the world with her husband Walter and visited many countries in the North and South hemisphere. She was a gifted pianist and loved to play the organ at the Evangelical Congregational Church in Hubbardston, MA. Shirley spent her career as a nurse anesthetist working at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester, MA, and Fairlawn Hospital, also in Worcester and retiring from her extraordinary career in 1986 from Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, MA. She loved to volunteer and delivered Meals on Wheels in Hendersonville, NC to the elderly and low income families. She also volunteered at the Utz Terrace Retirement Village where she lived for the past 8 years of her life. As a member of a card club within the retirement village, she met and loved many friends and neighbors. Her love for birds and nature was captured in the thousands of pictures she took over the years. Shirley lived a very full life. She panned gold in Alaska, rode elephants in Thailand, walked on the beaches of Tahiti, Fiji, the Caribbean Islands and Europe. Shirley leaves behind her daughter, Norma Hildebrand of Hanover, PA, sons Jim Stockbridge of Carver, MA and Keith Stockbridge of Mount Kisco, NY, two grandchildren, Meghan Gallery of Washington, D.C., Rebecca Gallery of Takoma Park, MD, her two cats, Mandy and Polly and many nieces and nephews in Maine and Rhode Island. Also surviving is her brother, Richard Brown of Sydney, ME. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter E. Dreyer, her son, Owen Stockbridge of Haines, AK and her brother, Larry Brown of Newport, RI. A memorial service will be held from 2-5 PM, Saturday, December 5, 2015 in the Community Room at the Lutheran Retirement Village at Utz Terrace, 2100 Utz Terrace, Hanover, PA 17331.
