The family of Sharon Hortense Waldern (Watson) announces her passing on September 16, 2020.
Sharon was born October 21, 1930, to Sydney and Marguerite (Rowbottom) Watson of Nanaimo. She had a childhood full of adventures there.
She enjoyed telling stories of swimming in the Nanaimo River or at Piper's Lagoon, ice skating and bike riding - activities she did throughout her life - and, working in the butcher shop and using the vacuum tubes for customers' change while working at Marks and Spencer.
After high school, Sharon worked as a payroll clerk at the sawmill in Youbou, near Lake Cowichan, staying in the women's residence. Youbou is where she met Donald Waldern, a university student from Vancouver. They married on January 3, 1953, and settled in Vancouver while Don finished his agriculture degree.
In their married life, Sharon and Don lived in Washington State, several communities in BC, Saskatoon, SK, and Lacombe, AB, before finally retiring in Summerland in 1989. Sharon made many good friends along the way, and enjoyed exchanging dinner parties and card nights, or dancing at the Summerland Yacht Club.
Sharon was a committed volunteer for the Altar Guild at St. Stephen Anglican Church, for the Summerland Drop In Centre, and the Summerland Art Gallery, as well as various charitable organizations. She loved flowers, gardening, and dogs and was always ready to give out pats or go for walks.
Sharon and Don raised four children, who live in various places, but always came home to enjoy her sense of humour, great meals, and loving nature. She will always be in the hearts of: her husband, Don; daughter Joy (Steven) and their daughter Megan (Brian) with their daughter Evie, and their son Greg; son Trent (Sharon) and their children Shyla and Ian; daughter Shelly; and daughter Heather (Murray). She is also survived by her brother Sonny Watson of Nanaimo.
The memorial service will become available on Providence Funeral Homes website for those who want to join in the celebration of Sharon's life. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Alzheimer Society of BC, St. Stephen Anglican Church, PO Box 697, Summerland, BC V0H 1Z0, or Penticton Regional Hospital.
