August 23, 1924 - November 15, 2020
Born and raised in Calgary to famed Calgary columnist Harold King, Robert "Bob" King joined the Royal Canadian Air Force with his sister Mildred during World War II, becoming a wireless air gunner and achieving the rank of Sergeant. After marrying his love, Dorene Hunt, in 1946 and becoming an accountant, Bob and his family lived in various locations in Alberta and BC before settling in Summerland in the 1960s. However, his life was much more than accounting. He was an enthusiastic Boy Scout and then beloved Scout Leader for years, which honed his gymnastics skills - skills that served him throughout his life (especially with his children and grandchildren). After retiring at 64, Bob took his love of swimming to the next level and began to compete in the Senior Games, where he won numerous medals and set new records until his early 90s. Bob was a lover of all people and beloved by all in return. He always had a warm smile, a laugh, and a pack of Mentos candy or a chocolate bar to hand out to whomever he encountered during his day.
Bob passed away peacefully in his sleep and went to join Dorene, with whom he shared 65 years of happy marriage. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but most especially by his four children: Rob (Maureen), Keith, Michael (Kim), and Colleen (Danny); his grandchildren and great grandchildren;and his dear friend Albertine.
In lieu of flowers, the King family welcomes donations to the Summerland Alliance Church, where Bob was a founding member.
