In loving memory ~
Paul Matthew Martin passed away with family by his side on Monday, February 27, 2023 at the age of 89 years. He is remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Jacqueline; his six children, Janet (Kim), Jim, Linda (Steve), Bob (Heidi) Greg (Jan), Paula (Scott); and 12 grandchildren Ryan, Sarah, John, Morgan, Austin, Kirsten, Kaitlen, Cameron, Breanna, Zachary, Jordan and Jack.
Paul was the youngest son of Tom and Vera Martin and was raised on a farm in Eston, SK alongside his seven siblings. He was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas and Bill; sisters, Mildred, Dolores and Marjorie. He is survived by his sisters, Pat Mercier and Mary Ellen Karpenic. It was a hardworking family farm where Paul learned the importance of family values.
Paul met the love of his life, Jackie at Waskesiu Lake, SK and they were married on March 2, 1957. His career started with Gulf Oil in Saskatoon which took him to Cape Breton in 1970 and then to Fort McMurray in 1976 for the startup of the Syncrude project. Paul retired in 1993 and he and Jackie have enjoyed thirty years of retirement in Summerland, BC, the longest they have lived anywhere. Paul loved his new 'job' in Summerland and carried his dedication and strong work ethic with him into retirement, taking an active role in the community and many sporting organizations.
Paul loved sports and loved being with people, bringing light and humour to every gathering. He was a special friend to many and these friendships have followed him around the country.
Most importantly, Paul was a humble man who put his family first. He spent many hours coaching, playing and watching sports and games with his children and grandchildren. He never passed up an opportunity for a good game of cribbage.
We would like to thank the Summerland Interior Health Palliative Care Team, caregiver Heather, and Holy Child Catholic Church for their support and compassion over the past several months.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated at Holy Child Catholic Church, Summerland, B.C. on Tuesday, March 7.
