In Loving Memory ~

Muriel Blake Proverbs, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024, at the age of 99, just short of her 100th birthday.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, to Pearl and Grant Peart, Muriel enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her four siblings, Art (Gwen), Doug (Helen), Jean (Ted), and Dorothy. Muriel graduated with a BSc in dietetics and nutrition from McGill University (MacDonald College) where she met her future husband, MD (Jinx) Proverbs. Muriel often said their days at university were some of their happiest and full of fun.

Muriel graduated top of her class, receiving the Lieutenant-Governor Medal of Quebec. In 1947, Muriel chose to forego a full scholarship to pursue a master's degree to marry Jinx in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. After a brief honeymoon in Banff, they continued by train to Summerland. In 1949, they returned to MacDonald College for one year when Jinx commenced his PhD and Muriel taught first-year nutrition courses as a sessional lecturer.

In 1953, Muriel and Jinx bought a house on the lake in Trout Creek and then proceeded to have 4 daughters in 5 years. Muriel's remarkable homemaking skills were evident in her delicious fruit pies and the many jars of fruit she canned each year.

Muriel was an avid bridge player, a dedicated member of the United Church, and a gracious host of many parties by the lake. She also played a key role in founding a ladies' investment and finance club and continued her investment activities well into her 90's.

One of the highlights of Muriel's life was the year she and her family lived in Vienna, where Jinx worked with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Muriel and Jinx were fortunate to travel extensively through their lives including many cruises, several months in Greece and many trips to Europe.

Once Jinx retired, they spent the winter months in Barbados for over 30 years enjoying their time with their Bajan friends and family. Even in her 99th year, Muriel remained an enthusiastic viewer of "Judge Judy" and "Wheel of Fortune".

Muriel was predeceased by her husband Jinx in 2018 and her great-granddaughter Alice Mary in 2022. She leaves behind her daughters Joan (Bob), Kathy (Ron), Patricia (Kim), and Dianne; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild.

Muriel will be remembered for her warmth, kindness and the joy she brought everyone around her.
