Helen BERG

BERG, HELEN CHRISTINA "NINA" (NEE STEVENSON) Of Summerland BC, passed away peacefully at the Summerland Extended Care Unit on August 31st, 2008 at the age of 97 years. She will be dearly missed by her sister Nancy Buhler of Kelowna and by five generations of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.four children: Brian (Faith) of Calgary, William “Bill” (Verla) of Castlegar;Sheila (Paul) Blake of Summerland, Diane (Bob) Clark of Kamloops, nine grandchildren: Dereck Berg of Calgary, Deborah Berg (James Nardai) of Toronto, Delanie (Andy) Westlake of Houston, TX, Laurie(Neil) Harasenchuk of Kamloops, Christine (Jeff) Burwash of Surrey, Sheri (Shane) Lavallee of Kamloops, Tania (Tracy) Jewett, Angie (William) Corrigan, Darin (Nancy) Berg all of Castlegar, six great grandchildren: Tiffanny, Jade, Kyle, Fynn, Ayden and Shelby, five great great grandchildren: Scott, Ethan, Hannah, Madison, Rachel. Helen was predeased by her husband John in December 1999 and by her brother George Stevenson in 1990. Helen was born in the town of Donegal, Ireland on January 26th, 1911. She and her parents, along with her 2 siblings emigrated to Canada in 1927 and settled in the Town of Springwater, SK. Later Helen moved to Saskatoon, SK., where she met and married John Berg and started a family of three. In 1942 the family migrated to BC., first settling in Westbank and then moved to various places within the Okanagan and eventually in 1946 settled in Summerland,. There a fourth child was born. Helen was a prolific poetry writer and she belonged to various poetry societies. She had many poems published in various newspapers, magazines and periodicals. She was also the recipient of a number of poetry awards. She published a collection of her poems under the title “Rhymes and Reasons”. There is one of her poems displayed at the entrance to the Summerland Museum. Helen was also an active gardener and she possessed a very “Green” thumb that was envied by her family and others. Knitting, reading, doing cross-word puzzles and biking were her favorite hobbies. The family extends their thanks to the staff at Summerland Extended Care Unit and to Dr. Brown for their loving attention and special care to our beloved mother and to friends for their support and love. The family extends an invitation to the Memorial Service on Thursday, September 11th, 2008 at 1:00 pm. from Summerland Alliance Church, 14820 N. Victoria Street, Summerland, BC with Pastors Rick Gay and Neil Allenbrand officiating. Memorial tributes made in memory of Helen Berg may be made to Charity of choice.
