In loving memory ~
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, George Witte, on October 22, 2022. He leaves behind his loving family, devoted wife Marolyn of 63 years, daughters Karen (Mark), Elaine (Randy), and Lynn (Terry), grandchildren Riley (Nicki), Nicole (Jason), Leah (Patrick), Andrea, Katie, and Sara, as well as great-grandson Bennett. He is also survived by his brother John (Gwyn), sister Anneliese (Stan), stepsister Gwen (Ian), extended family, and friends.
Born in a small farmhouse in northern Alberta, Dad and his parents moved to Germany prior to the war. During the war, Dad did his best to look after his younger siblings and mother when his father went missing. At age 14, he was sent on a ship to Canada to help his grandparents out on their farm near Grande Prairie. He loved being there with his extended family and especially enjoyed working in the fields. From there, he later worked in powerline construction in Edmonton, and he used much of his income to help support his mother and siblings who had arrived in Canada. In 1957, Dad was employed as a lineman in Penticton, where he met and later married our mom, Marolyn, and by 1961, he was working in Summerland.
In addition to running the electrical department in Summerland for many years, Dad had a strong sense of community and enjoyed his various positions and involvements over the years. He taught Judo, had years of auxiliary RCMP service, was a school trustee, Summerland councillor, and served on the Credit Union board of directors. He had a keen interest in provincial and federal politics and was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge, Baptist Church, and RCMP Veterans.
Dad was a wonderful friend to many people and was always willing to lend a helping hand whether it be nursing a sick calf, helping with electrical work, or assisting with home projects or renovations. He placed a high value on education, and he was always interested in his grandchildren's educational pursuits. He will be deeply missed by all.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
