Charles DODWELL

March 18, 2010

Charles Phillip Dodwell of Galiano, passed away March 18, 2010, from pancreatic cancer. Born in 1924 in Summerland, BC, Charlie spent many happy years with his family on their orchard in Prairie Valley. They enjoyed summers together at their cottage on Okanagan Lake, which Charlie continued to visit each summer of his life. When Charlie wasn’t sun-tanning or water skiing, he was hiking Snow Mountain or the hills above the lake. World travel, fishing, golf, badminton, tennis instruction & church, amongst others, kept Charlie busy, but his true life’s passion was flying airplanes. As a fighter pilot instructor and member of the 443 Squadron, Charlie was happiest in the cockpit of an F86 Sabre. Charlie’s first marriage with Audrey (nee Bakrud) produced 3 wonderful children; Peter, Pamela (Wayne) Beasley and Patrick (Vicki). After 25 years with Dodwell & Company Shipping, Charlie retired to an active life on Galiano with the love of his life; second wife Florence (nee Ringstad). He was extremely close to his stepson Ken Donaldson, with whom he bonded over many island projects. A man of peace and integrity, Charlie shared his love of nature with his grandchildren & great-grandchildren: Michael & Karyn Beasley, Bryson & Fraser Dodwell, Jenny (Gregor) Wilson, Chris (Beth) Donaldson & Oscar Donaldson. His grandchildren’s friends also came to call Charlie 'Grandpa'. He was loved and respected by all generations.
