Cecil MONK

August 24, 2009

Cecil C. Monk of Summerland BC, passed away peacefully with his wife of 53 years, Bev, by his side on August 24, 2009, at the age of 81. He is also survived by his children, Kathryn (John) Oswell, of Surrey BC and grandchild, Dylan Braico; Steve (Cathie) Monk of Langley BC and grandchildren, Josh, Braeden and Mathew Monk. Sadly predeceased by beloved daughter, Diana Lee Monk in 1993. Cec was born in Toronto, ON in 1927 to Mabel and Clifford Monk. Upon the death of his mother at age 5, Cecil was taken and raised by loving grandparents: Lillian and Jonathan Anstey in Dunbarton ON where he learned his love of carpentry. At age 17, he joined the army and served until the war ended in 1945, then he went to Army Rehab school in London ON, specializing in carpentry. He worked in a variety of jobs throughout ON and BC. When the Korean War erupted, he joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (R.C.H.A.) and served in Korea. After ending his service, he returned to Vancouver where he met “this young, good looking student nurse.” After courting her, she finally said “yes” and they married in May 1956. Cec was in construction most of his life; either as a carpenter; elevator mechanic; home builder (Monk Enterprises) or realtor. He seemed always to have a hammer in his hand. His hobbies were RV camping, golfing, fishing, playing bridge, flying single engine planes, and square dancing. But his happiest moments were with his wife, family and grandsons. A Memorial Service was held Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 1:30pm from Rosedale Chapel, Summerland BC. Interment in Mission BC will follow at a later date. Memorial tributes may be made to Moog and Friends Hospice House (Penticton BC), Canadian Cancer Society, or Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #22. Condolences may be directed to the family through Summerland Funeral Home at www.providencefuneralhomes.com.
