CARLA WIERSMA

December 7, 2010

Carla Johanna Wiersma died tragically in a traffic accident in Taiwan on December 7, 2010 at the age of 25 years. Lovingly remembered by her parents Paul and Joyce Wiersma, sisters Sharon (Kurt) Vos of Sioux Center, Iowa and Rachel (Mark) Peters of Surrey, BC, brother Daniel (Amanda) Wiersma of Burnaby, BC, nieces and nephews Meghan, Layne and Aidan (children of Sharon and Kurt), grandma Mary Wiersma of Orange City, Iowa, four aunts and uncles on the Wiersma side, five on the Haasdyk side and their families. Carla graduated from Summerland Secondary in 2003, attended Trinity Western University and the University of Victoria, graduating with a B.Sc. in Mathematics. She worked at Giant Foods, was Miss Action Fest in the Blossom Pageant, was actively involved in the Summerland Baptist Church, performed in school drama productions and played softball in the community. In her college years, she worked in Alaska for Holland-America Tours, at Thrifty foods in Victoria, as a summer student for Summerland Parks and Recreation and then at Vital Statistics in Victoria after she graduated. Since October 2009, she had been teaching English in Beigang, Taiwan and made the most of her experience with scuba diving in the island’s coral reefs and trips to Cambodia and Thailand. She had applied to return to school in BC and pursue a career teaching high school math. Carla was loved everywhere she went and will be remembered for her sweet smile, loving nature and a special quirkiness that set her apart. There is a hole in the world where the brightest and best of us is now missing. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. from Summerland Baptist Church, 10318 Elliott Street, Summerland, BC with Pastors Larry Schram and Randy Wheeler officiating.
