Buck BASSANI

May 15, 2009

Buck Bassani of Summerland, B.C. died Friday, May 15, 2009 at the age of 105. He is survived by his daughter, Ethelwyn (Len) Hintz of Kelowna, grandchildren Erin (David) of San Jose, California and Mitchell of Vancouver, and great granddaughter Tessa also of San Jose. Buck is also survived by a sister, Rita, and four brothers, Rino, Darvin, Pep, and Jim, all of Alberta. He was sadly predeceased by his wife, Helen and daughter Marolyn, three sisters, Amelia, Rosie and Emma and three brothers, Cuff, Maggio, and Paul and his parents Virginia and Paul. Buck married Helen Schuman on June 22, 1933. They farmed in Alberta for many years before moving the family to Penticton in 1951. Buck went back to look after the farm each spring and fall until 1954. Then he took some courses and became a lumber grader and worked in many different mills in B.C. In 1972, they retired to Summerland and created a beautiful yard and garden. Buck’s two favourite pastimes when he was younger were hunting and fishing. He tried to teach his daughters both of these skills. Later he began to do beautiful, fine woodworking and worked diligently in their garden. His last ten years were all about survival, which he also did well. Until his last one and one half months, he was still living in his home in Summerland. His family would like to thank all the Home Support Staff who took such good care of him in his last few years. They made it possible for him to stay in his own home and that made him very happy. In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate a donation to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation. A celebration of Buck’s long, remarkable life will be held Friday, May 22, at 1:00 p.m. at the Summerland Funeral Home Rosedale Chapel, 13205 Rosedale Avenue. Interment will follow in Canyon View Cemetery in Summerland.
