Beryl Eileen Gartrell (nee Swift) passed away peacefully with her family at her side, October 6th, 2010. Beryl leaves behind her loving family: Fred (Joanne) Gartrell, Lynn (Ross) Robinson, David (Pat) Gartrell, Colleen (Doug) Power, and Sherri (Bob) Macdonald, all of Summerland and Bruce (Kim) Gartrell of Oliver; seventeen grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Lloyd, in 2002, her daughter Trudy in 1972, and 2 infant sons.
Beryl was born on October 24th, 1921, in Penticton. She married Lloyd Gartrell on September 4th, 1942, just days before he was deployed for WWII. Upon Lloyd’s return they moved to Summerland where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Beryl was a devoted wife, loving mother and caring friend.
Beryl patiently raised her seven children supporting them unconditionally in every endeavour. She sang in the United Church choir for over 60 years and was recognized for her volunteer service in the community at RECOPE and seniors’ homes bringing joy to residents through sing-a-longs.
Beryl embraced the health food movement before it even began. She exercised to keep in shape her whole life and enjoyed trying fad diets, supplements and other natural remedies.
Beryl ’s quiet generosity of spirit defined her to the very end. Even as she declined with Alzheimer’s, she maintained her gracious and appreciative nature making her a joy to care for. Thank you to staff at Prairie Valley Lodge and Summerland Extended Care Unit for your care and compassion.

Beryl is sadly missed and lovingly remembered. A Celebration of Life was held on Tuesday, October 12th at 1:30 p.m. at the Summerland United Church.
