After several weeks of rapidly growing COVID-19 cases in Summerland, the town is back to single digits over the most recent week, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
Over the week of Nov. 28 to Dec. 4, the Summerland local health area recorded just four new cases, down from the 28 recorded only the week before.
Those 28 cases had doubled the 14 recorded over Nov. 14 to 20, which had doubled from Nov. 7 to 13’s seven cases.

During those three weeks of increases, the Summerland area also wrestled with several exposure events at schools in the community.
With the drop in cases in Summerland, the total number of new COVID-19 cases across the South Okanagan has dropped by more than half, going from 47 over Nov. 21 to 27 down to 20 cases over the most recent week.
Princeton and Keremeos went their second consecutive week with no new cases in the local health areas.
Penticton’s cases dropped less than Summerland’s, down to 15 cases over the most recent week from 18 over Nov. 21 to 27.

The BC CDC has begun tracking the vaccination rate for children aged five to 11 as part of their statistics. As of Dec. 7, Summerland and the Southern Okanagan are sitting at seven per cent of kids with their first shot, Penticton has nine per cent, Keremeos has five per cent and Princeton has three.
Third dose rates are also steadily picking up, with Penticton sitting at 19 per cent of those aged 12 and up, followed by the Southern Okanagan at 17 per cent, Summerland and Keremeos at 16 per cent and Princeton at 10 per cent.
