Water valve replaced

Summerland Prairie Valley Road water crews emergency repair

Summerlanders in the Prairie Valley Road area were without water on Oct. 11 as municipal crews had to perform an emergency repair on one portion of the water line.

Earlier in the day, crews were replacing a flow meter at Prairie Valley Road and Victoria Road South.

The work was to be done without shutting off the water, but workers then noticed a flaw with the valve fitting.

In order to replace the cracked fitting, they had to stop and drain the pipe, shutting off the water at Prairie Valley Road and Morrow Avenue.

Scott Lee, manager of water operations for the municipality, said the flow meter and other parts of the water line date back to the mid-1970s and are now showing their age.

The flaw was discovered at 4:10 p.m. and the line was shut down between 5:30 and 6 p.m.

By 9:30 p.m., the work was completed and most people had water service again by 10 p.m.

The pressure regulating valve at Prairie Valley Road and Victoria Road South has undergone earlier problems. In April, 2010, the line was shut down at that area when a leak was discovered.
