Video will show Summerland graduation ceremonies

While graduating students at Summerland Secondary School have received their high school diplomas, a video of the entire graduation ceremonies will be released on Friday, June 26, 7 p.m.

The video will be available on the Summerland Review website at www.summerlandreview.com.

Raja Gupta, the teacher organizing the graduation ceremonies, said the restrictions around the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in changes to the school’s graduation ceremonies.

Instead of the traditional event at the Summerland Arena, the school set up a series of “mini-ceremonies” in the high school gym over a three-day period earlier this month.

Only seven students received their diplomas at any given time, and each graduate could have four people present to watch the event.

A total of 110 students are graduating this year.

Pre-recorded events had been planned for all high schools within the Okanagan Skaha School District, with recordings show to simulate a traditional graduation ceremony.

“Given that the province continues to be under the state of emergency, and we are mandated through the health authority to follow those rules of the state of emergency, we’re really not in a place where we can find creative ways around those directives of the health authority,” said acting school district superintendent Todd Manuel.

Alan Stel, principal of Summerland Secondary School, said a committee made up of parents and teachers worked hard to create the graduation ceremonies for this year.

“They were able to completely transform this space,” he said of the work done in the high school gym.

“The details came together well.”
