The value of building permits issued in Summerland in July was significantly higher than in recent years, but construction activity so far this year in remains lower than in the past.
In July, 17 building permits were issued, with a total construction value of $8,096,212.
This is more than double the dollar value of building permits issued in June 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023.
From January to July, 101 building permits have been issued in Summerland. The total construction value for these permits is $18,817,712.
By comparison, in the first seven months of 2023, 115 building permits were issued, with a total construction value of $29,120. From January to July 2022, 153 building permits were issued, with a total construction value of $33,737,000.
Recent years have seen significant new construction activity in Summerland.
Throughout 2021, the construction value of all building permits issued came to $59,775,300. In 2022, the value of building permits issued in Summerland totalled $49,622,000 and in 2023, all building permits combined had a value of $47,190,023.
In a report to Summerland council, Brad Dollevoet, director of development services for Summerland, said the community has recently received building permit applications for large multifamily buildings, at six and five storeys, with more projects in the works.
These are expected to increase construction value for the community, he said.
