Conservative candidate for South Okanagan West Kootenay Helena Konanz is promising upgrades to the 201 Forest Service Road as part of her campaign.
The road was used as an alternative route when the landslide north of Summerland blocked Highway 97 in 2019.
“Canada’s Conservatives will end the delays and get shovels in the ground on long-awaited highway upgrades to 201 Forest Service Road,” said Konanz on Thursday. “Whether it’s getting to work or visiting family, these upgrades will help people get to where they need to go faster, safely, and more conveniently.”
This road is primarily used by the forestry industry, but traffic is sometimes redirected along 201 Forest Service Road when there are landslides on Highway 97.
A rock slide on Highway 97 north of Summerland in January 2019 forced commuters travelling between Kelowna and Penticton to take long detours through the 201 Forest service Road. The highway was closed for weeks with many commuters remarking what a treacherous route the 201 is.
“This shovel-ready project will create jobs in our community and fuel a strong economic recovery for the region,” said Konanz.
“I’d like to thank Dan Ashton, MLA for Penticton for his ongoing effort to make this alternative route a reality,” said Konanz. “This is what happens when we cooperate at different levels of government.”
