Council is applying for $1 million in funding to rebuild the Summerland Kiwanis Pier.
The funding application is through the B.C. Tourism Destination Development Fund.
In the recently developed Summerland Waterfront Concept Plan, the pier was identified as a high-priority item with significant cost implications of $750,000 to $1 million.

“The pier replacement is included in the five-year capital plan as it has been assessed to be in poor condition and at the end of its lifespan,” Lori Mullin, director of community services, said in a report to council.
In addition, the pier and the lakefront walking path had been damaged during flooding in 2017 and 2018.
The pier has historic importance to the community. It is at the site of a Canadian Pacific Railway wharf and barge slip which was constructed in 1910. The wharf was rebuilt in a joint project between the Summerland Kiwanis Club, Summerland Rotary Club and others.
At present, the pier is closed for a structural assessment.
In order to obtain funding, the municipality must submit an Expression of Interest form, which includes a resolution confirming council’s authorization for the project to proceed. The deadline for this form is Dec. 7.
Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to submit a full application.
Projects must be completed by March 31, 2025.
