A new cycling hub, with a map and a bicycle repair station, was unveiled in Memorial Park in Summerland on Friday afternoon.

The hub was unveiled as part of Summerland’s annual Earth Week celebration.

Mayor Peter Waterman described the station as “the latest addition to Summerland’s cycling infrastructure” at the unveiling ceremony.

He said the station demonstrates the goal in Summerland’s Official Community Plan of promoting pedestrian and bicycle transportation in the community.

“The new cycling hub at Memorial Park means that residents and visitors alike will now have easy access to information about the many beautiful cycling trails in our community,” he said. “Summerland is a destination for active people of all ages, and we are excited to add the Memorial Park Cycling Hub to our community’s resources to support enjoyment of the outdoors.”

In addition to the large map, the station also includes a bike repair station and tools.

A skills workshop and a flat tire and bike repair workshop will be held at the cycling hub on May 19.

Henry Sielmann, chair of the Trail of the Okanagans Society, said the hub will be a benefit to cyclists.

“I hope that a lot of people will enjoy the map,” he said.

The map shows the location of trails and cycling routes within the community — something Sielmann believes is needed.

“Unfortunately, cyclists often cannot find their way to trail heads, businesses, and facilities,” he said.
