Summerland to hold information session for prospective council candidates

An upcoming information session will provide details for those considering running for a position on Summerland’s municipal council or the Okanagan Skaha School Boardthis fall.

The information session will be held in council chambers in Summerland Municipal Hall, 13211 Henry Ave. on Aug. 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

To be eligible for a position on local government, one must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years or older on general voting day, and must be a resident of British Columbia for at least six months before filing nomination papers.

Candidates do not need to be residents or property owners in the area where they are running for office.

The municipal election for one mayor, six councillors and two Summerland school trustees will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The positions are all for four-year terms.

Nomination packages are now available. The nomination period runs from Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. to Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.

At present, Summerland mayor Peter Waterman has stated he will not seek re-election. Coun. Toni Boot has announced she will seek the mayor’s position this fall, and Coun. Janet Peake has earlier indicated an interest in running for mayor.
