Summerland will be seeking a feasibility study for their aquatic centre with a specific list of requirements.
Council gave their approval for a request for proposals from companies to conduct the study, which would look at the costs for either a renovation and expansion of the existing community pool building, or the construction of an entirely new Community Recreation and Health Centre
Also approved was up to $10,000 in engagement costs for working with the Penticton Indian Band in relation to the project.
In the report presented to council, the must-haves for the project included:
- Three changerooms,
- A six-lane pool,
- Leisure pool,
- Family hot tub,
- Sauna,
- Fitness centre,
- Activity and group fitness room,
- Multipurpose program room,
- Administrative and support spaces
Previously estimated costs for the project included $16 million for a replacement of the same size in 2018 and $21.5 million for a 50 per cent larger replacement that year, and a $30 million estimate for an 83 per cent larger replacement that came out of the 2021 needs assessment.
The feasibility study will not look at the costs for an additional two competition lanes for the main pool, or the inclusion of a tennis centre.
For the future, the inclusion of optional childcare space and a gymnasium.
Council will review whether they want to include consideration for the inclusion of a Primary Health Care Centre at their Feb. 22 meeting.
The goal is to have all of the necessary information to have a referendum on the Aquatic Centre by October, 2022.
The Town of Oliver and Osoyoos are also currently looking into building a joint aquatic centre.
