The rifle range in Summerland has been renamed in honour of one of the community’s pioneer families.

At a ceremony on Oct. 5, the Summerland Rifle Range was renamed the Dunsdon Rifle Range.

Harry “Pop” Dunsdon arrived in Summerland from Harrow, United Kingdom in 1891, when he was 17. The following year, he claimed land near Eneas Creek and in 1893, he built his first log cabin on the property.

The rifle range, off Wildhorse Road, was established prior to 1906 and has served the community since that time.

The Dunsdon family property is near the rifle range and five generations of the family have been involved with the rifle range.

“I just wish my grandfather could be here to see this,” said Gord Dunsdon.

He recalls spending time with his grandfather, his father and his children at the rifle range.

Kurtis Norrish of the rifle range said other families in the community have been involved with the rifle range, but the Dunsdons have been involved continuously.
