Summerland shatters December heat record

Temperature of 20.4 C eclipses past record from 1932

The month of December started off warm in Summerland, shattering the previous high temperature record for the month.

On Dec. 1 at noon, the temperature reached 20.4 C. This is well above the previous record of 15.6 C, set on Dec. 2, 1932.

While temperatures can and will rise above freezing in December, it is rare for the temperature to exceed 12 C during the month.

In the past, only a few days have seen temperatures as mild as those recorded on Dec. 1.

On Dec. 27, 1980, the temperature reached 15.5 C. On Dec. 11, 1921 and Dec. 2, 1941, a high temperature of 14.4 C was recorded in Summerland. And on Dec. 18, 1936, the thermometer reached a high of 13.3 C.

Last year, the temperature reached 12.3 C on Dec. 20.

The normal high temperature in Summerland for this date is 0 C, and the normal low is -6 C.
