A contractor has been selected to operate the Summerland landfill for the next four years.

Cantex-Okanagan Construction Ltd. was awarded the contract at the June 22 municipal council meeting.

The cost of the service is $193,582 for the first year, rising to $230,728 in the fourth year of the contract.

This amount is significantly higher than the previous landfill contract.

To accommodate anticipated increases to the costs of landfill services, the budget was increased from $102,352 to $122,822, a report to council from director of engineering and public works Don Darling and chief administrative officer Linda Tynan states.

Even with the additional funds, the shortfall is $70,760 in the first year of the new contract.

To cover this shortfall, a portion of the funds received from Multi Material B.C. will be put towards landfill costs.

MMBC is expected to pay the municipality $180,000 for recycling services this year.

Municipal staff will also complete a review of the landfill operations and the fees and charges.

A resolution to award the contract to Cantex received unanimous council approval.
