SUMMERLAND REVIEW FILE PHOTO GARBAGE CONTAINERS Summerland will switch to a new automated collection system for garbage, yard waste and recyclables later this year.

Summerland residents will pay more for garbage when the new collection system takes effect later this summer.

But the higher garbage fees are not connected to the switch to an automated waste collection service.

Linda Tynan, chief administrative officer for the municipality, said the fee increase of $3.40 a month is a result of a new garbage collection contract.

Garbage servce contracts are renegotiated every few years.

The automated garbage bins will replace the method of taking bags of garbage, recyclables and yard waste to the curb.
